THE 2009 WEED SHOW AND SKY’S THE LIMIT
In the summer of 1940, the Women’s Club of Twentynine Palms had as their guest speaker at their monthly luncheon, renowned etching artist, Mildred Bryant Brooks. Mrs. Brooks was considered Americas best etcher of trees and California landscapes. The members of the club had no fresh flowers to present to their guest, as was the custom. Unfazed Mrs. Brooks stated that fresh flowers were unnecessary when there were so many beautiful weeds. With dried vegetation collected from the grounds of the 29 Palms Inn, Mrs. Brooks astonished her hostesses by creating artistic compositions with the “weeds”.
The following year the Weed Show was born.
This annual competition has become a tradition in Twentynine Palms since 1941. Open to all, children and adults, it has a new theme each year.
The title chosen for the 2009 Weed Show is “SKY’S THE LIMIT” with each category being space related. It is to salute the efforts being made to fulfill the dream of building an observatory here in Twentynine Palms.
This year’s Weed Show will take place on November 7th and 8th at the Twentynine Palms Historical Society museum on National Park Drive, and we hope that you will come to see how out-of-this-world exhibitors can get when interpreting galaxies, planets and stars using plant material.
