DEAD CACTUS
This cactus has several common names. It is also known as mat or devil’s cactus.
Grusonia parishii grows low to the ground in mats. It is one of the park’s rare cacti and is limited to the sandy soil of Queen Valley. The flowers are variable from one mat to the next, ranging in color from yellow to rose and shades in between. This cactus blooms from the last week of June into the first week of July. The flowers open fully during the hottest part of the day (noon to 3 p.m.). |
