This shrub has a distinctive branching pattern with opposite branches forming right angles with the main stem.  It is a member of the mint family.

Scutellaria mexicana is also called bladder sage.  It has a unique appearance because of its numerous, inflated pods, which in age are often tinged with rose.  It blooms March to June.
